Big News, Old News

Things I love about (amateurishly) looking around for my relatives on ancestry.com:
-Fancy census taker script
-Names, names, names...my current faves are Elnora and Mathilde
-Extended families that lived together - so many clues hide in those cousins and grandparents!
-The 1900 census question about owning a radio
-Passenger Lists - I haven't learned how to search them effectively and they are so mysterious
-Occupations - organ builder, telephone operator, rural mail carrier, preacher, hired man and my favorite "keeping house"

I studied History in college and loved being in our state archives looking for primary sources. My favorite thing was wearing white gloves to look at old photos. The search for more info about my own family started after I watched a few episodes of Who Do You Think You Are? I like to dabble and then not do anything for months.

These antique baby clothes were saved by a great-aunt along with some important old paperwork and given to me. I pulled them out recently as I started looking through the family tree again

I think I'm going to the past because I'm excited about the future. We're looking forward to stuffing another chubby one into brand new and vintage baby clothes next year - we're having a baby in July 2013 :)

So I'm on the hunt for names but the stories I make up about my relatives to fill up those gaps between census years are entertaining too. Right now I'm focusing on my namesake, a great-grandmother. I found out she lost both her parents by the time she was 14 and that she was named after one of her aunts. Her babies wore these clothes. I'm so thankful to have them.

Yay for more babes!! I really like your blog! Love all the very vintage baby clothes. Love those old names too, especially Mathilde (it's my grandmother's name).
